Making Thanksgiving — All Year ‘Round
By Sherry Richert Belul
So many of us really love Thanksgiving because its focus is so simple and true: be with people you love and find some time to offer gratitude for all that you have. We’re so fortunate to live in a society that practices this annual day of thanks. But we could have so much more. Thanksgiving Day could be just the very tip of a great gratitude iceberg!
In my own life I’ve learned that it’s possible to extend Thanksgiving all year long by creating an ongoing practice for myself and my family that is a conscious effort to bring gratitude into our lives throughout the day, in a variety of ways. I promise you, if you commit to trying just a couple of these practices for just a couple weeks, you’ll experience the magic of gratitude. Because here’s the secret: every single time we pause to express gratitude for something in our lives, we get to experience receiving that thing all over again. When we’re giving thanks, we’re receiving more of what we’re grateful for. Saying thank you instantly multiples what we have! Read more…
A Simple Celebration
Right now, wherever you are, just grab a piece of paper or your laptop. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and then start to write or type 10 things for which you are grateful. Don’t put this off. Don’t just think about things in your head. Focus. Write. Feel. Here are some places in your life to think about: family, friends, health, career, passions, hobbies, teachers, money, food, books, colors, textures, treasures, memories. This is one of the simplest exercises I know that immediately lifts my mood and deepens my relationship with myself and others in my life. Give it a try! (For extra credit, click here to download Simply Celebrate’s 10-10 sheet , print out seven of ‘em, and commit to an entire week!)
