I’m thinking of you and popping by with another super simple gift idea for you today.
In fact, you could call this one a SUMO super simple gift. (Hee hee)
I shared this with you a couple years ago, but I was reminded about it when I was watching a James Acaster comedy special on Netflix last night and he performed a skit that included tying a red ribbon on an orange!

Okay, so before I tell you about this sumo idea, please remember: you and I are rethinking the way we see gifts!
Gifts do not have to cost a certain amount of money (Or any money) or be certain type of anything.
Gifts are any time we reach out with love and thoughtfulness. Period.
Right now, there’s a special need for gifts that are light-hearted and might make someone smile or laugh. There’s so much hard stuff happening; people need to smile. Let’s gift ’em that!
Never underestimate the power of a sweet, simple surprise!

So โ what’s this orange-you-glad gift today?!
Well, what you are going to do is bring a friend a silly sumpthin’ when you meet them for coffee or dinner sometime.
That silly sumpthin’ is a Sumo Citrus orange with a little ribbon tied at the top and a fun little card tied to the ribbon.
One time I was meeting a couple girlfriends and wanted to bring them a tiny token of love. At first I thought I’d buy them each a chocolate bar, but then I decided I wanted to bring something a tad healthier.
The idea of a Sumo Citrus orange popped in my mind because I love them so much and they are kind of a whimsical looking fruit.
They are so goofy with their thick skin and jolly top! I think they look a little Seussical, don’t you?
So, I made up a punny little tag to tie on โ and voilaโ instant gift!
You can do this, too.

Here are a few tips for how to make this super easy for yourself:
- Plan ahead:ย If you know you are going to see your friend for coffee on Friday, then make a note to look for a Sumo Citrus when you are at the market a day or two beforehand!
- Find some ribbon:ย The Sumo Citrus conveniently comes with a knob on top that is perfect for tying a ribbon around. That will add a celebratory touch.ย
- Printย +ย hole punchย the kumquat/sumo fun card that I’ve pasted below my signature as a post-script. (You can punch the hole in the upper left corner so you can then slip the card onto the ribbon before you tie it on your Sumo Citrus.)
- Be imperfect!ย If you can’t find ribbon or a hole punch, then for goodness sake just tape the little sign on your orange! Or, hand the card to your friend when you give them the Sumo Citrus. This isn’t a contest! Done is always better than perfect.ย

This is not a big deal, right?
And yet, can you see how this will bring a little pinprick of light to your friend? (And to you, too! Surprising others is fun for us.)
I’ve said this before, but it is worth repeating:
- When we do these little things โwhen we offer these small gifts โ we are telling people that we thought about them in advance.ย
- We are letting people know that we were looking forward to them being with us. We are showing them that they hold a special place in our lives and that we want our time with them toย feel special.ย
- Sometimes when our gestures of love are small ones, we might think they don’t really “count.” We may not even think of them as gifts. (But they are!)ย
I’m here to remind you that a gift is an expression of love, appreciation, generosity, positivity, or good energy that we give to someone because we want to intentionally offer them uplift or let them know we care.
We need to reinvent the way we see gifts in our culture because that will enable to us realize that we can celebrate and appreciate people way way more.
It makes life extra fun!

YOU can be someone who brings people in your life surprise LOVE.
Even small tokens (er, SUMO tokens!) show someone how important they are to you!
Will you do it?
We all need more joy and celebration right now.
How about if YOU are the one to juice things up a bit for your friends?!
Seek celebration โ even in dark corners,
xo Sherry
๐ P.S. If, oh-so-sadly, your local market does not sell Sumo Citrus, then please use your awesome creativity to come up with a substitute fruity gift. You could tie a ribbon on a shiny apple and include a note, “Thank you for making life feel more hAPPLEly!” Or, bring ’em a honeydew and write, “You’re one in a melon!”
๐ P.P.S. Did you ever hear that old “Knock-Knock” joke that goes something like this:
Knock knock.
Whoโs there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Banana Banana.
Knock knock.
Whoโs there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Banana Banana.
Knock knock.
Whoโs there?
Orange.
Orange who?
Orange you glad I didn’t say banana?
๐ P.P.P.S. If YOU need some laughter, I highly recommend James Acaster’s “Repertoire” on Netflix. He’s got amazing facial expressions and really smart humor!
๐ P.P.P.P.S. Here’s the little card you are going to take a screen shot of and then print out. If you don’t know how to take a screen shot, GOOGLE it! Or ask someone in your house! I promise you can do it. (We can do hard things!)
