Welcome to your Sunday LoveGram.
I’m grateful to sit across this virtual table from you every Sunday.
Today, I send you the wistful coo of a mourning dove.
I send you bright marigolds from a sweet street vendor in The Mission.
I send you the laughter that comes when someone says, “Remember when?”
💥💓💥
Today’s LoveGram opens with a recording of a mourning dove.
There’s something about the mourning dove’s call that holds both longing and beauty. It always makes me feel tender and especially human. You know what I mean?
It feels like fitting “music” as we welcome Day of the Dead and remember people we love who have died.
On Friday, I hosted a LOVE LIST workshop through Reimagine called “Love Never Dies.” We gathered to write specific, heartfelt reasons we love someone who is no longer here.
There was tenderness. There were some tears. There were funny stories.
There was so much love.
One couple joined us on the anniversary of their son’s death. In the midst of their grief, they shared memories that made them smile. They were so glad to be talking about him.
It reminded me how meaningful it can be to say someone’s name and to share beautiful memories together.
Celebration can look like this, too: making a little space to remember.
A LOVE LIST offers us that space.
We can write about someone’s quirks, their kindness, their silly jokes, or the ordinary moments we wish we could experience with them again.
And as we write our lists, we’re celebrating more than that person. We’re celebrating the relationship we have with them. We’re celebrating the original and unrepeatable connection we shared. And that we continue to share, even years after they have died.
I hope you’ll consider making a LOVE LIST for someone in your own life who has died, but will never be forgotten.
Scroll down to listen!
💥💓💥
Is there someone you would love to bring into the room this week?
Maybe you could write three or four things you love about them.
You might place your list beside a photograph, light a candle, or set out a small object that belonged to them. Play their favorite music. Read a poem. Tell someone a story about them.
See how you feel when you give yourself a little time to connect with that love.
Your loved one may be physically absent, but the love you share with them never dies.
Seek celebration — even in dark corners,
xo Sherry
