Saved by a poem.

06-22-2012

I'm reading a book, Saved by a Poem, by Kim Rosen. Kim teaches a practice of learning poems "by heart." (No, not memorizing! It's all about connection.)

As it turns out, what's also been going on for me this week is an extra scoop of Monkey Mind ice-cream doled out daily. The flavor of the week: am-I-good-enough mixed in with does-anyone-like-my-work.

Thankfully, all of this gels in the very first poem I choose to learn by heart:

I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there's a pair of us!
Don't tell! they'd advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one's name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

—Emily Dickinson

Ah, freedom.

What a great antidote to ego!
